What are Service Cancelable Loans?

Service cancelable loans are loans that can be repaid through service in a field identified by the Georgia Legislature as a "critical need." If you qualify for a service cancelable loan, the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) will provide you with the loan to pay for your education. Upon completing your field of study and working in the "critical need" field in Georgia, your loan is forgiven. It's a great solution for you and for the State of Georgia. You get a great deal of assistance in completing your education in a field you would like to study, and Georgia benefits from your needed expertise.

What if I change fields or decide not to work in Georgia?

You should be serious about your selected field. If you do not complete your degree program or if you choose not to work in Georgia for a certain period, you will be responsible for the amount of any loans accumulated, along with the interest. Depending upon the program, service cancellation is at the rate of $1,500 - $3,000 a year. In general, a student may only participate in one service cancelable loan program at a time. Since these programs are designed to fill critical needs within the state, if you leave the state before your service obligation period ends, you will be required to repay any outstanding loan balances in cash. These programs are for students who know what they want to do.
